We’ve heard that everyone wants to be a star, and it seems like everyone lately wants to knit or crochet a star too! Stars have been taking over our Instagram feeds and fashion blogs. Is it just us, or do you feel it too? We’ve pulled together seven great star-themed patterns for you to make. One of these patterns may just be your lucky star!

Rustic Star
These Rustic Star ornaments by The Crochet Fix are just the thing for Christmas or a Matariki celebration. They would also be an excellent applique for a sweater, bag or blanket. While they look simple, they are actually quite challenging and an excellent way to stretch your crochet skills! They’re crocheted in the round using textured stitches. They’re also the perfect scrapbuster project. No scraps, you say? How about a little Wool and the Gang Shiny Happy Cotton, then?

Sleepy Time Crochet Gnome
This adorable, cuddly Sleepy Time Crochet Gnome by Jen Hayes has associated Crochet Star Pillow and Crochet Moon Pillow patterns (also free), perfect for our theme. The gnome isn’t some wee little amigurumi; it is a beefy being that is perfect for a child, or even someone bigger than a child, to cuddle. And he will certainly be cuddly if you crochet him out of Wool and the Gang’s Crazy Sexy Wool.

Star Trails
Cetus Knits is one of our favourite New Zealand knitting designers, and many of her designs are astronomically themed to boot! Star Trails is a triangle-shaped shawl with a lace pattern that may remind you of the trail that follows a shooting star. Zealana Kauri Fingering has some beautiful colours that would pair well with this pattern.

Dog Star
Tin Can Knits has done it again with this gorgeous Fair Isle-style Dog Star sweater. It is fully size inclusive, so you could knit one for everyone from a newborn to the most strapping person you know. It’s worked bottom-up in the round, and reviewers rave about the clarity of the pattern. Whoever you make it for, it will be positively sumptuous if you use Zealana Rimu DK to do it.

Starry Night
Another glorious Cetus Knits design, the Starry Night wrap is inspired by saris. The pattern looks complex, but it uses mosaic knitting, so you only need to know knitting, purling, slipping and counting in order to make this project. It even comes with a video tutorial, so if you are a beginner ready to stretch their wings, this could be your next pattern! It would look great done with Urth Yarns Harvest Fingering.

Star Girl Cardigan
Make a sweater that’s perfectly sized for you with the Star Girl Cardigan by Nicole Simpson. This is crocheted to your measurements. It’s also very customizable, so, for instance, you can make it as long or as short as you like! While making something perfectly tailored to you may sound complicated, the clear instructions here make it easy. It has fun stars at the yoke and has seamless A-line construction. We think Broadway NZ Merino DK would be perfect for this.

Starlite Blanket of Stars
The breathtaking Starlite Blanket of Stars by Alice Tarry is a celestial wonder. It uses seven different types of block to create the magnificent hexagon. You will want a yarn colour palette that creates a gradient or fade effect, but also has colours for stars – something like Broadway NZ Merino DK.
Disclaimer: We do not test every pattern that we list. (We wish we could but we have a yarn shop to run!) We do a lot of research to see if patterns are well reviewed and seem well written. But it is possible that something will slip by us. We hope you love these patterns and let us know if they do not meet your expectations!
