This simple cross-over scarf is quick and easy to knit, and easy to wear. The handy back loop allows the scarf to hold its crossed shape, keeping your neck warm without the hassle of needing to adjust it, and it sits neatly over a garment or tucked inside one as well. The colourful trim on the end uses less than half a ball, so it is great for stashbusting, or skip it completely for a solid colour. It is fast to knit and suitable for beginners.
This free pattern was designed for Zealana inspired by the tī kōuka, also known as the cabbage tree. This is one of the most distinct trees seen across New Zealand, standing up to 12 to 20 metres high. These beautiful trees have long slender fibrous, sprout scented flowers in early summer and have bluish-white berries that are much loved by birds. Among the many benefits the tī kōuka tree provides, such as food, fibre and medicine, the leaves can also be woven into baskets, sandals, rope and other items, which was the inspiration for this design.

- 1 ball of the dominant colour (shown in K16 Earth)

Who Do We Recommend the Tī Kōuka Scarf For?

About Zealana
Woolyarns, the creator of Zealana, was the first company to spin possum yarns. They created the Zealana brand in order to showcase their ultra soft, light, warm and durable luxury hand knitting yarns. They have since sold the brand, but they continue to make the yarn in Wellington, New Zealand. Their Performa series of yarns features machine washable possum blends.
Settlers brought the non-native possum to New Zealand in the 19th century for the purpose of building a fur industry. Then the possums devastated New Zealand’s bird population. When you buy Zealana yarns, you are helping manage the possum population in New Zealand, and helping prevent possum predation on New Zealand native birds. You’re also getting yarn made with a fibre that is breathable, warmer than either merino or cashmere, and luxuriously soft.
