The Kakapo Cable Scarf, a clever textured skinny scarf is perfect for wrapping around your neck and tucking into blazers, and is both casual enough for day to day use but textural enough to add interest and elevate a dressy outfit. Designed for Zealana Heron, this soft, warm blend of merino and NZ brushtail possum will keep you warm. And with only 100 grams of 10 ply/worsted weight yarn it knits up quickly, making it excellent for gifts!
It is inspired by the New Zealand kākāpō, a highly-endangered endemic parrot. Sadly there are only 247 kākāpō left alive today, and because of their low fertility rates and defenselessness against predators, they are endangered. Settlement and introduction of non-native animals (such as cats, stoats, rats and possums), clearing of forests, and increases in hunting in New Zealand are the biggest threats to kākāpō survival. However, with persistent efforts from a number of organisations such as kākāpō Recovery their numbers are slowly increasing.

About Zealana
Woolyarns, the owner of Zealana, was the first company to spin possum yarns. They created the Zealana brand in order to showcase their ultra soft, light, warm and durable luxury hand knitting yarns. Their Performa series of yarns features machine washable possum blends.
Settlers brought the non-native possum to New Zealand in the 19th century for the purpose of building a fur industry. Then the possums devastated New Zealand’s bird population. When you buy Zealana yarns, you are helping manage the possum population in New Zealand, and helping prevent possum predation on New Zealand native birds. You’re also getting yarn made with a fibre that is breathable, warmer than either merino or cashmere, and luxuriously soft.
