“Mahalle” (ma-ha-lay) means “neighborhood” in Turkish. This traditional toe up sock has been knit in Turkish families for generations, taught to children from the time they can first manage the 4 to 5 double-pointed needles used. These simple socks are knit in the round from the toe up using a traditional Turkish Figure 8 Cast On. The foot is knit in the round, in stockinette stitch. The heel is turned using short rows, the leg stitches are picked up afterwards and the sock is finished with a 2×2 rib.

• 2.25 mm/US 1 needles in your choice of tool for small circumference knitting (eg double pointed needles, magic loop, or flyers)
• scissors
• darning needle to weave in ends
