Urth Yarns | Airbender Shawl Kit

NZ$131.30

Brought to life by the talented Yiğitcan from Pufido Knits, the Airbender shawl represents the different conditions of air and the graceful movements of an airbender, in this ethereal, graceful design.

Air, the essential element for all living beings, is everywhere; in gentle breezes, powerful storms, and even in stillness. It inspires us without being seen, with its gentle touches, ice cold winds, and warming gusts. Even as we breathe. The first section symbolizes spiraling winds, blowing in dynamic motion. The next section captures the essence of air itself with Estonian nupps. The third section focuses on releasing it with holes, embodying a sense of lightness and stillness. Finally, the shawl is trimmed with a wavy border, reminiscent of a gentle breeze.

This shawl is made from Urth Yarns 16 Fingering and Urth Yarns Bonmoher, alternating between them in different sections. Urth Yarns 16 Fingering is the very finest of merino, incredibly soft against the skin, and Urth Yarns Bonmoher is a delightful blend of mohair and silk for soft fluffiness. These yarns are dyed in complementary shades, with every colour of Bonmoher having a matching 16 Fingering. Use matching colours to let the texture do the talking, or combine different colours to play with the juxtaposition of colours and textures.

The sample depicted is made from N10 (for Urth 16) and N10 Cumulus (for Bonmoher).

About Yiğitcan from Pufido Knits

Yiğitcan / Pufido (they/he) is a Turkish queer knitwear designer based in Istanbul. They studied Textile Design, and their work usually focuses on unexpected details, striking forms & attitude. Their work features interesting textures, combining multiple stitch types. They love to seek out and develop new ideas, and to play with colors using several techniques, and they take delight in bringing a traditional element alive with a modern perspective.

They say that “I first picked up knitting needles on my hand when I was a child. There was always someone who was knitting at the home. Thanks to my mom and aunt, they taught me a lot about knitting. And from that moment I fell in love with this magical craft. I think everyone should knit. Because knitting is what? FUNDAMENTAL!”

Yiğitcan frequently turn their hand towards designs for Urth Yarns.

Urth Yarns employ female artisans in Mersin and Istanbul to hand dye their yarn, and use innovative dyeing techniques in order to ensure the yarn is full of vibrant colour. Urth Yarns has partnered with Trees for the Future to run their Knit One Plant One scheme – for every skein you purchase, a tree is planted, which means This amazing yarn is good for you and good for the world!
