Description

Pom Pom Quarterly is an institution, putting out magazines chock full of clever, creative and delectable knitting and patterns for nearly 10 years. We are delighted to bring this gorgeous magazine to you.

Issue 48: Checkmate

It is sad days for all Pom Pom Print fans, as they have announced that Issue 48 will be their last new issue, and they have gone out with an incredible collection. The title of this edition, Check Mate, has many meanings at this time, but most importantly, it marks the end of a wonderful journey. We have loved having Pom Pom on our shelves, and we will miss this wonderful publication.

This knitted and crocheted ode to wovens includes patterns any maker will be proud to create. With two needles or a hook, these designs were inspired by the beauty of weaving and pay a special tribute to this ancient sister craft.

Featuring designs by: Marie Régnier // Susan Lin // Giuseppina Flamini // Yessabett Bueno // Stine Hoelgaard // Olivia Glennon // Sara Ottosson // Julia Wilkens // Jule Kebelmann // Elspeth Vance

Issue 47: Monochrome

Pom Pom has always been a celebration of colour in knit and crochet form and this issue is no different. The amazing team behind the team love colour so much that most issues are jam packed with as much as possible, but for this monochrome-themed issue the focus was on what could be done with fabrics that used more subtle tonal differences within a single hue, or closely related ones. Our designers played with depth, saturation, and brightness; maximum impact with minimum contrast. This issue is extra special in our opinion because it features the Anjou sweater, designed here in New Zealand by Alexandra Liang, and the gold one is made from Zealana Kauri Worsted and Zealana Heron!

In addition to the projects, there is an interview with Dana Williams-Johnson who answers eager questions about her PhD dissertation that centres around knitting and representation of Black women in the online crafting community. There is also have a winter-friendly recipe for beetroot ice cream by Fi Churchman.

Issue 46: Guest Editor: Candice English of The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers

The Pom Pom team love collaborating with creatives they admire and they are thrilled to welcome Candice English of The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers as Guest Editor for this issue. Candice is inspirational both as a dyer and as an advocate for Indigenous women. Candice has brought a fresh perspective to these pages, along with her distinctive aesthetic, drawing from both her Indigenous roots and life in the American West.

The patterns in this issue are a representation of hard and soft duality in the American West. The hard work embedded in the people of Montana is a result of the softness you find in the spirit of Indigenous homelands. You will find classic designs that can be worn in utilitarian ways but also jazzed up a bit for social outings.

Issue 43: Horizon (Winter 2022)

Great knits are like great art because they make us think differently, and the process of making can be even more revelatory! Pom Pom’s 43rd issue is inspired by the work of women artists Etel Adnan and Hilma af Klint, showing us how we can look to, and beyond, our horizons when it comes to our craft.

Etel Adnan’s work features landscapes, using bold and unexpected colours to portray the places where the land meets the sky, and Hilma af Klint created large abstract paintings of metaphysical meditations that she felt she had been called on to represent. Both show us distinct ways of looking at the world, and at possible worlds beyond the visible realm, just as a knitter or crocheter can look at a ball of yarn and ponder a plethora of outcomes!

This winter collection of 10 patterns features striking colours and innovative techniques, and bold and imaginative knits that play with pattern and perspective. So whether you fancy a colourwork challenge, or just some meditative time as the sun sets in the sky, there’s bound to be something here to expand your crafting horizons!

Featuring designs by: AMY BLACKWELL // KJERSTIN ROVETTA // MARZENA KOŁACZEK // AVERY ERB // AUDREY BORREGO // REGINA WIMMER // MARIE RÉGNIER // MER STEVENS // SARAH OPIE

Issue 43 also includes an insightful and expansive interview with yarn dyers Jude Harper and Lola Johnson, and a fascinating dig into the history of the colour pink by Hannah McGregor. There is also a a bookmark tutorial from artist Elizabeth Ashdown using the centuries-old art of passementerie, and a recipe for a carrot cake from Fi Churchman that will bring an orangey glow to chilly evenings.

Issue 39: Rythym

The knit and crochet designs in Issue 39 are inspired by rhythm! This Winter 2021 collection is packed with patterns which honour echoes, explore semitonal shifts in colour, and include repeating motifs to allow you to get into a stitching groove. We love how the designers have taken our auditory theme and created patterns which highlight the aspects of rhythm we see, such as written musical scores and the visual representation of soundwaves. No matter at what tempo you craft, there’s a winter project for you here!

Featuring designs by: JUDITH BRAND // ASTRID COLDING SIVERTSEN // ADELLA DUTRA // ANA D // TETYANA VYAZOVSKA // JOHANNA KUNIN // NIDHI KANSAL // KEIKO KIKUNO // CLEO MALONE // VALERIE NG

Artist, maker, and stylist Lydia Morrow was the creative director for this issue’s photoshoot! After you’ve found your crafting cadence, enjoy the two articles in Issue 39. In ‘Rhythms of Handiwork’, Felicity (Felix) Ford explores the communal and historical relationship between craft and rhythm, while Claudia Khan writes touchingly about the delicate melody of parenthood, partnership, and time in her article, ‘A Family Song’. Kiyomi and Sachiko Burgin are the authors of this issue’s handmade lip balm tutorial, so you can combat chapped lips brought on by cold weather and even have some non-knitted handmade gifts ready for the festive season.
