Moeke Yarns have an amazing story, and Elena is an amazing yarn.

Moeke Yarns was started by Romanian Ioana and her family to preserve the Romanian traditional fibre mills and a fibre tradition that stretches back hundreds of years to produce minimally processed yarn.

Elena, named in honour of Ioana’s grandmother, is made from wool from the Romanian Tigaie breed of sheep. This yarn has personality: single ply, it twists and curls, and has great stitch definition. Any garment worked in this yarn will have a rustic feel and even basic textured stitches will be accentuated.

No harsh chemicals were used while cleaning, washing and spinning the wool.

Because the yarn is minimally processed, it retains some of the protective layer of lanolin. Lanolin is the wool wax that help sheep to shed water from their coats and so, our yarns are especially suited for making garments that need to keep moisture at bay, for instance gloves or socks. You may find some vegetation in the yarn due to the minimal hand processing.

We recommend that before using this yarn you wash it in tepid water and a mild pH neutral detergent. This will allow the yarn to blossom and it will improve softness.

Elena natural undyed comes in three shades: natural (off-white), brown and grey.

The yarn is spun on machines over 100 years old in some of the last of Romania’s fibre mills. As the machines are not modern enough to produce consistent weights, there can be variation in the skeins. It is the spinner who knows from experience how much wool has to be processed in every batch in order to get more or less the same weight. Therefore the skeins are weighed and labelled after being spun, washed and wound. Those that fall between 46 g and 55 g are labeled as 50 g, those from 56 g to 65 g are labeled as 60 g, and so on. Each skein is labelled with the weight along with the batch and mill where it was made. We recommend ensuring you have enough for your project as yarn can vary between batches and mills.
