Sock Yarn is Hedgehog Fibre’s most popular and famous yarn base, and for good reason. This fingering weight yarn is 90 % merino wool and 10 % nylon, superwash. The 21.5 micron merino wool is mulesing free, softly spun, non-scratchy yarn. The perfect balance of soft and durable, the dye takes especially beautifully on this base. Sock Yarn is the ideal yarn for accessories, especially Stephen West designs for fingering weight yarns. It is fantastic for for shawls, scarves, baby items, hats and more! It can also be held double for a heavier weight project which makes a soft, supple fabric with even more variegation.
NOTE: this yarn is hand dyed and there can be considerable variation between skeins, even when simultaneously dyed. We have used photos supplied by Hedgehog Fibres to ensure accuracy. However, some batches vary from these photos more than others, and not all photos are on the Sock Yarn base. So, if you are unsure about any colour, please email us and we will be happy to answer any questions or send you a photograph of our current stock! We also recommend alternating skeins if more than one skein of the same colourway is used in the same project, and a consistent look is desired (eg for sweaters).
Patterns for Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn
Beata Jezek’s free Le Pouf cardigan pattern has the balloon sleeves you’re looking for. There’s also a cool colour transition built into the design.
The intricate Baseline shawl pattern is made with a simple garter stitch. Because the width is added in sections, you can make it as large as you want it to be, from a small wrap to a cozy shanket. The addition of Hedgehog Fibres’ Kidsilk Lace gives it a translucent effect.
