A poncho may seem like a simple idea — after all, it’s a cloth with a hole in the middle! But this garment originated with ancient Andean cultures. It was millenia before it spread worldwide, and even longer before people began knitting and crocheting them. They are practical, cozy and a great item to wear as part of the 2024/2025 layering trend. (We have previously written a swoncho knitting and crochet pattern roundup, if you prefer sleeves.)
We’ve rounded up our favourite poncho knitting and crochet patterns right here. Is there one that fits your style?
Poncho Crochet Patterns
Franny Granny Poncho
The Franny Granny Poncho by Hannah Cross is a unique spin on the granny square motif — and you know that we love a granny square. If you’d prefer a swoncho pattern, you’re in luck, because it also has a sleeves option! It is a beginner-friendly and size inclusive pattern, so if you are looking for one of your first projects or just a relaxing crochet, this is a great choice! It would look great crocheted in Urth Harvest Worsted.
Poncho With Cowl
Saskia Oudshorn’s Poncho With Cowl has buttons on the sides to allow you to secure it close to the body if you prefer! The cowl neck will definitely protect you against any cold breeze that tries to work its way down your collar. The pattern is in a size medium, with information on how to adjust it up or down. Make it especially cuddly by using Malabrigo Rios.

Lace Poncho
Brome Fields has made the Lace Poncho knitting pattern free on their site. This pattern is great for beginners and features a video tutorial. It is a perfect summer-weight piece and knits up quickly. Knit it flat using the elongated knit stitch. Make it with Anzula Nebula for that special sparkle and you’ll have a perfect going-out poncho!
Aflutter Poncho
You all know we are huge fans of Marin Melchior’s Papillon shawl knitting pattern. Well, if you love that but wish it were a poncho, she has granted your wish with the Aflutter Poncho! It features the same gorgeous colourpooling and waves, but in an easy wraparound style. Just like the Papillon, it’s written for Urth Uneek Fingering and Urth Harvest Fingering. (And we have 141 colourway ideas to give you inspiration!)
Coorie In Poncho
Amy Palko has designed another beautiful creation with the Coorie in Poncho knitting pattern. It has a mock turtleneck, offset raglan increases and short rows at the back of the neck to create a perfect fit. The pattern includes a video tutorial. Reviewers say it is exceptionally clear, and rate it as an easy pattern. There are also instructions on how to make it longer — just remember to get enough yarn for the added length! We think Zealana Rimu DK would make this just the snuggliest.
Poncho
Want a giant, super chunky wool poncho that will completely swaddle you in warmth? Loopy Mango’s Poncho knitting pattern may be just the ticket. It has an enormous cowl as well as arm holes so that you can reach for things. It is an intermediate pattern that according to the designer takes 8-15 hours to complete. And what to knit it out of? This looks like a job for Wool and the Gang’s Crazy Sexy Wool.
Poncho Quartetto
The Poncho Quartetto by Pallina Knit features four cables and a mock turtleneck that give it an elegant style. It is knitted in the round. Juniper Moon Farm’s Patagonia Organic Merino has the kind of elegance that will look fantastic with this pattern.
Roll Neck Poncho
Sian Brown Knitwear Design’s Roll Neck Poncho has a bit of an ‘80s vibe and uses colourblocking to great effect. The enormous collar adds a lot of panache. You’ll knit this in sections and then seam it together. Feel good in this poncho when you make it with Wool and the Gang’s Feeling Good.
Unfortunately, we cannot test every pattern in our pattern round-ups, because the shop keeps us too busy! Please let us know if you have an issue with any of these patterns, because we want this roundup to be great!
