Halloween Pom-Pom Pals
This Halloween Pom-Pom Pals pattern by Autumn is written as a “fun and easy Halloween craft for kids” … but we say adults can have fun too! The instructions turn pom poms into pumpkins, ghosts, spiders, Frankenstein and a scarecrow. It uses googly eyes and buttons, but you could also use safety eyes to make these, alongside any yarn scraps you have on hand and perhaps a Clover pom-pom maker. (For other methods of making a pom pom, please refer to our article How to Make a Pom-Pom: Three Easy Ways.)

Crochet Eyeball Coasters
Let someone know “I’ve got my eye on you” by making these crochet eyeball coasters. This pattern by Stitch Fay uses multiple colours, so it’s a great chance to learn or practice changing colours in half double crochet. It is double-sided and, when made out of cotton, highly absorbent, so it’s practical as well as spooky! DMC Happy Cotton is the perfect yarn for this pattern.
Halloween Skull Garland
This Halloween Skull Garland pattern from See Love Share is quick to crochet. It also works for both Halloween and Day of the Dead decor. And you can use the skulls for many other things: you can stitch them to a sweater, you can make a wreath out of them, you could put them on a Trick or Treat bag — the possibilities are endless! Depending on the colour palette you want to use, Shiny Happy Cotton or Lily Sugar ‘n Creme could be the right choice.
Pumpkin Spice Crochet Stackable Trio
The Pumpkin Spice Crochet Stackable Trio crochet pattern by Brianna Kepner is perfect for Halloween, and in New Zealand you can always pull them out again in autumn! They use a puff stitch for an eye-catching and touchable texture. You’ll crochet them flat, then seam and stuff them, so if you haven’t stitched crochet sections together before this is a great way to learn. These would look very cute in Kauri Worsted.
Crochet Light-Up Ghosts
Crafty Crochet Castle has a free video tutorial showing how to make Crochet Light-Up Ghosts. Tuck an LED votive inside to make them light up! It is a beginner-friendly pattern that is a great way to use that end of a skein you’ve had kicking around your yarn stash. If you don’t have any scraps, firstly kudos on your yarn management techniques, and secondly we’d recommend DMC Happy Cotton.
Spooky Halloween Basket with Bats
This Spooky Halloween Basket with Bats crochet pattern from Nordic Hook is a work of art! It will absolutely elevate your home Halloween decor. Flex your crochet muscles with a little bit of tapestry crochet. If you’ve never done tapestry crochet, the free pattern links to a tutorial. For something this lovely, Wool and the Gang’s Shiny Happy Cotton is the right choice.
Crochet Witch Gnome
Jen Hayes’ Crochet Witch Gnome pattern turns out gnomes that are ridiculously cute. From the tip of her pointy hat to the toe of her sturdy boots, this stuffy will steal your heart. The pattern also links to accessories like a broom, a cauldron and pumpkins. It is intermediate difficulty and worked mostly in continuous rounds. She also has instructions regarding safety considerations for children under the age of three. This would be a great fit for DMC Happy Cotton, which is sturdy enough to stand up to lots of love.

The Grim Squeaker Egg Cozy
The Grim Squeaker Egg Cozy crochet pattern by Wicked Woolens is just adorable for what it is. But if you’ve read the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, it is a must-make. It is clearly written, easy to make and you may be able to make it with scraps. But if you need a yarn to use for it, we’d recommend Broadway Purely Wool Baby, which will also keep your egg warm!

The Bubbling Cauldron Coaster Set
The Bubbling Cauldron Coaster Set crochet pattern by Colby Soldan is great because it is both decor and practical! Each coaster has “bubbles” around the edges, and when the coasters are stored in the knitted cauldron, it looks like a bubbling cauldron! This was designed for Lily Sugar n Cream.
Cat Eyes Pillow/Pouch
Alexis Sixel’s Cat Eyes pillow/pouch crochet pattern is spooky enough for Halloween and cute enough for every day. Use this pattern to make a throw pillow or a zipper pouch. This is a mosaic crochet pattern using charts, so you should have some familiarity with crochet going in. Fortunately, the video tutorials accompanying this pattern will teach you a lot! Depending on the colour palette you want to use for the eyes, you may want to use Shiny Happy Cotton or Lily Sugar ‘n Cream for this one.
Windspinner Ghost
Lonike de Vos has created a Windspinner Ghost crochet pattern that is as intricate as it is lovely. It is a three dimensional piece that requires some experience to make, but it’s worth it for the results. That spin will increase the spooky factor when someone comes to your home at night! Make it from Broadway Purely Wool for something sturdy enough to stand up to the elements.
