Baby clothes patterns are great to make in more ways than one! It’s not just that you can have the satisfaction of seeing your child, or the baby of someone you love, wearing something that you made with your own two hands. Baby clothes also generally work up quickly, so you can get that satisfaction of a project well done in a day or two. And because they are handmade, they will become treasured hand-me-downs for the next baby — or the next generation! Seems like a reason to make an entire baby wardrobe, no?

Louise Top. It is made out of dusky purple yarn with lacework at the chest and buttons at the center.

Louise Top

The Louise Top by Zloty has beautiful lacework detailing that increases the challenge for the knitter. It is sized for newborns to six months, and it has a large neck opening to make it easy to put this on a baby. This calls for something that is gentle on the skin, and we’d recommend Manus del Uruguay’s Alegria. It is a smooth yarn that will be soft on sensitive newborn skin.

Two shots of a toddler wearing the Sunflower Dress Pattern. It has granny squares in a sunflower design over the chest and a skirt striped in blue, orange, yellow, and brown.

Sunflower Dress Pattern

The Sunflower Dress Pattern by TJ at Passionate Crafter uses a combination of granny squares and stitches worked in rounds and comes in sizes from newborn to 6 years old. The pattern is very customizable; you can make the skirt short or long, and change out the colors as you like. You can also make it with more ease to accommodate growing young bodies, or less ease if you would like it to be close-fitting. You can also add a chain to the back, which will allow you to customize the fit a bit more. TJ recommends using cotton yarn, and we think Wool and the Gang’s Shiny Happy Cotton would be perfect. (Please note that the pattern mentions a matching hat, but the hat pattern is no longer available.)

Baby Sweater

Beth Koskie has designed a sweet and simple Baby Sweater crochet pattern for newborns. It fastens in front, and is made seamlessly in one piece. It has a crew neck and fastens in front. This is another garment that would be great in Shiny Happy Cotton

This pattern was designed as part of Bundles of Love, a charity in Minnesota, USA that makes bundles of clothes and other items for newborns in need. If you are looking for a way to help others, their bundles are an inspiration that may be something you could do in your own area!  (Photo by Oiyi.)

Elva Cardigan. A long sleeve cardigan in a dusky purple iwth lacework at the chest and waist, and buttons down the front.

Elva Cardigan

The Elva Cardigan by Taiga Hilliard offers sizing from newborn to 5 years. It has a circular lace yoke and lace around the waist, as well as buttonholes, which will provide knitters with plenty of challenges as they work! The lace is both charted and written out, so whichever you prefer, you can use while making this. The sleeves can be made short, ¾ or long, offering plenty of options. We think this would be a dream in Anzula Nebula, which is sparkly without being scratchy. If you’d like a matching dress, Hilliard has also made the Muti Dress baby knitting pattern using similar motifs.

Baby socks and hat with a subtle ripple pattern. Knitted in mottled blue yarn.

Vintage Pique Rib Hat and Socks

Another coordinating set is the Vintage Pique Rib Hat and Vintage Pique Rib Socks patterns by Julie Tarsha. Both are designed for newborns; they feature texture on the outside but a smooth inside for delicate skin. The ribbed stitch keeps things interesting. Both are made in one piece. Hedgehog Fibres Sock Minis are very soft, and won’t leave you with much yarn left over!

A blue-green sweater with a white band at the yoke. The white band has fox faces knitted into it in orange.

Fox Baby Yoke Sweater

Claudia Quintilla has designed another wonder with the Fox Baby Yoke Sweater. It is sized for children from 3 months to 4 years. It has wonderful details on the circular yoke and is worked as one piece in the round. This may be challenging; you will need to know how to knit and purl in the round, work single increases and decreases, work from charts, and work with two colours at once. Juniper Moon Farm’s Patagonia Organic Merino is lovely and soft, with vibrant colours that would be ideal for this sweater.

A long cardigan sweater for a baby. It is knitted in gray with white edging and has an open front.

Baby Vertebrae Sweater

Keep that bub’s back warm with the Baby Vertebrae sweater by Kelly van Niekerk!  This is a frontless cardigan, which allows you to keep the rest of your child warm while also leaving the chest bare for more easy washable clothing to catch those baby burps. It’s worked up seamlessly in one piece and has raglan sleeves. It is sized for newborns to two years. Reviewers say this popular pattern is very clear and works up quickly. Van Niekerk recommends Malabrigo Rios, one of our favourite yarns, because it is soft for a baby’s skin.

Bobble Romper. A white baby romper with bobbles on the edge of the chest, shoulders and belly.

Bobble Romper

What could be cuter than this Bobble Romper crochet pattern by Mon Petit Violon? It is rated Easy/Intermediate, and it has a number of elements that keep it interesting, such as the bobbles and the buttonholes. The buttons make it easy to change diapers. It is sized from newborn to 18 months. This calls for a DK yarn, and we would recommend Hedgehog Fibres Merino DK.

A white crocheted vest with yellow, pink, and purple stripes

Little Granny Vest

The Little Granny Vest by Shara Made is super-easy and extremely wearable. It is worked top-down and has a square neck. The pattern is sized for newborns to 18 months. Because of the way it is made, it could be an excellent stashbuster or way to use up scraps — but if you don’t have enough, we’d recommend DMC Happy Cotton to make this a multi-coloured delight.
