Crochet tops aren’t just a trend anymore; they’ve become a fashion staple. And a me-made crochet top is much better than a crochet top that you purchase at a shop. You can make it to fit you, you can pick the colours that you love and want to wear, and you can make it out of lusciously touchable fibres that will last. Best of all, it is easy to make crochet with openwork that is perfect for summer wear, and for summer making! Will one of these crochet top patterns be just the thing you’re looking for?

Equinox Crop Top

The Equinox Crop Top pattern by Neena Noel Bell is a flexible pattern that you can truly customize to your own body and your own preferences. It is incredibly size-inclusive; Bell provides instructions for how to measure yourself and tailor the top to your body. You can make it as a bralette or as a crop top, and because of the way the design is structured, that crop top could be extremely cropped, cropped at the waist, or somewhere in between. And you can make it with either a halter tie or criss-cross straps. That is an amazing number of options for a free pattern! And it’s cute as heck, too. Bell recommends crocheting it with Lily Sugar n Cream.

Wren tank. A blond woman stands with hands on hips wearing a white and gray crocheted tank top

Wren Tank

If you want a quick, easy and stylish make for summer wear, the Wren Tank by Cactus & Lace Designs is the crochet top pattern for you. This is a beginner-friendly pattern, in part because it only uses one stitch; you only need to know how to Sc and Ch to make this. That also makes it a great project to bring to the beach or the bach, because you don’t have to worry about pages of complicated pattern instructions blowing away. The sizing ranges from XS to 5XL. If you wish it had sleeves, she also sells a tee version of the pattern. It calls for a DK yarn, and we would recommend Broadway NZ Merino for something sturdy, lightweight and breathable.

Bubblegum Tee. A dark-skinned, brown-haired woman wears an off-the shoulder pink crocheted T shirt with bobble details.

Bubblegum Tee

For a super fun tee with a lot of texture, the Bubblegum Tee crochet pattern by Designs by Key is a must-make. The rows of bobbles are eye-catching and the wide boat neck allows it to be worn off the shoulder, and it is less difficult than it looks. Key describes it as “the perfect project for crocheting and watching your favorite Netflix show.” We’d recommend making this with Malabrigo Rios, because the superwash merino is ever-so-comfortable in a wide variety of climates, plus the colour variations in the yarn would give the bobbles and stitches even more depth.

A dark-haired pale skinned woman wears an overlarge crocheted blue tank. She has a long white cardigan pushed down around her elbows.

Sagebrush Tank Top

The Sagebrush Tank Top crochet pattern creates a versatile piece that can be worn on its own, under another piece, or on top of a slim top. Plus it works up quickly, so if you love the first one you can make more! But even though it works up quickly the pattern offers some intriguing challenges. The ribbed texture is fun, and f you’ve never crocheted edging, this is your chance to learn. The pattern also has shaping in most rows. Designer Grace offers both cropped and long versions of the pattern, and t is designed for sizes from XS to 3XL. We would recommend Urth Harvest DK for its brilliant range of colours.

Claire Crop Top

With a drop shoulder, wide sleeve and cropped hemline, the Claire Crop Top combines several popular trends. It uses an open stitch, which makes it suitable for layering over a tank or tee, and since you can make it as long as you want, it could also become your new favorite beach coverup. The pattern is size-inclusive, going from XS all the way to 5X. Urth Harvest Worsted would really show off that open stitchwork!

Sweetpea Crochet Top

The Sweetpea Crochet Top by EvelynandPeter is another great layering top with open lacy stitchwork. It is worked in two panels that are then joined together. Reviewers say there is enough going on to keep it interesting, but it is easy to follow, clearly written and easy to make. We think this would look beautiful and hold its shape well when crocheted in Broadway NZ Merino.

Holly Tee. A woman with pale skin wears a green crochet top in a lacy motif that reveals some of the colour underneath.

Holly Tee

Agnieszka Reduch just released the Holly Tee crochet pattern and we are in love with it. The lace motif is eye-catching and is sure to attract a lot of “where did you find that? You MADE that?” comments. It is worked seamlessly in the round from top to bottom. This is a charted pattern, so knowing how to read charts is key, although the phototutorial should help. The sizes range from S to 4XL. Urth Harvest Fingering has the colour range and the stitch definition to make this top magnificent.

Huldra Sweater. A woman with pale skin and dark hair wears a short sleeve crochet sweater with yoke colourwork.

Huldra Sweater

The Huldra Sweater by Tatsiana is a great example of crochet circular yoke colourwork. It has a boat neck, some bobbles and even crocheted cables. It is designed to be oversized and worked seamlessly from the top down. The sleeve length and body length are adjustable, so you can make it short sleeved or long sleeved, cropped or longer. While this pattern may seem like a big challenge, the photo tutorial will help you navigate your way through. The sizes range from XS to 4X. Zealana Kiwi Fingering offers a range of colours that would really show off that colourwork.
